1. What is your roof pitch?

The first thing you should know is the slope of your roof’s surface, or also known as roof pitch.

The roof pitch is measured by its height and length. A very low height means that the slope is almost flat, and a tall height results in a high slope.

Different roof slopes work better with different roof materials. For example, asphalt, wood and clay require you to have a higher slope so that water can easily flow down from your roof. If you install them on a roof pitch that is lower or flat, the water will be stagnated and will lead to leakage issues.

 2.  Do you want it to match the rest of your house?

The materials you install on your roof will greatly affect the exterior appearance of your home.

Therefore, it’s best to choose a roof material that’s compatible with your home’s architecture design. For example, if your semi-d home uses all clay tiles, then installing wood shingles for your kitchen extension may look out-of-place.

 3. Can your building support it?

Not all roofing materials weigh the same; for example, concrete tiles and slates are heavier than wood and asphalt shingles.

If your house doesn’t have the right support structure, you’ll need extra help to increase the structure. This will add up further costs, time, mess, and inconveniences.

 4. Can it withstand a hot and humid climate?

Malaysia’s tropical climate means you must consider how well your roofing materials will fare against the sun and rain. Some materials are better than the rest in our weather.

 1. Asphalt Shingles

This form of roof shingles is the most commonly found and most affordable option for residential and commercial spaces. Made out of organic or fiberglass materials, this option can last up to 20 years on average. There are various style and colour options available, making this the go-to roofing material.

 2.  Metal Shingles

There are two forms of metal roofing: shingles or solid form. This form of roofing is picking up steam locally as developers are starting to opt for this stylish and cost-effective option. These are light, durable, and come in many colours too!

 3. Wood Shingles

With an average life span of 30 years, wood shingles is an aesthetically pleasing option, but it does come with various drawbacks. Aside from being pricier, they require more maintenance and are prone to weather damage and decay.

 4. Slate Shingles

This popular option, although on the pricier side, has a lifespan of more than 100 years and is the most durable option as proven by buildings with slate roofs from the Shakespearean era are still standing strong. Made out of real stone, its fire-resistant quality makes it a front runner!

 5. Tile (Clay) Shingles

Tile or clay shingles is also a popular option amongst developers and homeowners. Similar to slate, tiles have a long lifespan – almost 100 years – and require little to no maintenance. Having said that, as most of them are made out of terracotta, they are susceptible to cracking. Before opting for slate or tile shingles, it is best to check with your contractor if your home can withstand the weight of these pieces.
